TIPS
(Training
for Intervention
ProcedureS) is a dynamic
skills -training program conducted by certified TIPS trainers. Participants
learn about the effects of alcohol consumption and gain an understanding
of the social and legal responsibilities associated with the service
of alcohol. Through videotape presentation, interactive class discussion
and skills training exercises, participants learn to recognize potential
problems and intervene in a tactful manner to prevent alcohol-related
tragedies. TIPS workshops are coordinated by CASE and are offered
throughout the academic year.
During
T.I.P.S. training, students receive training on how to increase
their communication and interpersonal skills toward influencing
their peer's drinking behavior in a non-threatening way. This program
goes much further than the standard approach of receiving information
on the dangers of alcohol, but instead students receive training
on how to intervene with others who are consuming too much alcohol.
T.I.P.S. is utilized nationally and is used heavily by the hospitality
industry, where hotels, casinos, restaurants, clubs and taverns
are getting their personnel T.I.P.S. certified. Becoming T.I.P.S.
certified may help our students obtain a career in the hospitality
industry. Also, many insurance companies acknowledge the value of
T.I.P.S. training as an effective risk reduction tool and offer
substantial savings on liquor liability premiums to T.I.P.S.-certified
associations.
